Adding mulch to a flower bed or garden bed isn’t just good for appearances. Mulch is an essential landscape supply that reduces weeds, enriches soil and protects plants from harsh heat. When organic mulch biodegrades, it releases nutrients into the soil that make it more fertile. Mulch also insulates soil from the sun, keeping it cool during hot weather, and preventing water from quickly evaporating which helps plants to flourish.
Types Of Mulch
There are two main types of mulch: organic mulch (made from bark and wood chips) and rubber mulch (made from dyed pieces of rubber). The main difference between organic mulch and rubber mulch is that rubber mulch doesn’t biodegrade. As a result, it doesn’t enrich soil. The benefit of using rubber mulch over organic mulch is that it lasts much longer eliminating the need to re-apply it annually. Rubber mulch is also ideal for playgrounds because it creates a softer surface that provides fall protection without the risk of splinters. Playground rubber mulch can also be washed easily.
